JOHN W. MCCORMACK U.S. POST OFFICE AND COURTHOUSE
Boston, Massachusetts
This building was renovated in 2006 in order to repair certain aspects of the building and incorporate various green features. One of these features was a green roof located on top of the 5-story base of this 22-story building. All of the plants are native, and they were chosen for their ability to thrive in the urban climate of Boston. The two-level roof has extensive areas, where shrubs and oaks are housed, and intensive areas, where ferns and mosses occupy. Cisterns capture stormwater runoff from the upper 5th floor. The water is then transported, using a solar-powered pump, to irrigate the green roofs when needed.
